Technique Project #23: Adding Personal Narrative to your artwork
Goal of this project
In this project we will increase our ability to play with the balance of abstraction and reality by balancing real space & value with a dynamic juxtaposition of our self-portrait and an object of meaning.
Supplies Needed

The photo of yourself from the pencil chiaroscuro portrait drawing project (a High Resolution photo with good contrast)

One Visual Item/object to interact with this portrait (an item that is somehow personal or meaningful to you)

Your drawing pencils or other drawing/painting materials

Drawing Paper or Rives BFK Paper

Your ruler

 Your Gum Eraser

Drawing Board

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Expand your picture plane on the drawing surface.

2. Draw a couple of thumbnail sketches on a separate sheet of paper to play with the composition of this piece.

3. Begin drawing on the paper with pencil and sketch the portrait of yourself.

4. Start to play with imagined space and begin to integrate the object into the composition surrounding your portrait.

5. Consider shape and movement when integrating your portrait and object together in the space.

6. Begin to use the full range of value to balance the composition and to emphasize certain areas that you would like to focus on.

7. Allow the object to tell a story about you as the piece evolves.
Artistic Food for Thought
How can you integrate and tell stories about yourself or others through abstracting space and interspersing it with object, shape, color, movement to tell us more about the figure in the artwork and their internal world?

Technique Project #24: Self-Portrait through Three Objects
Supplies Needed

At least three (3) objects that represent different parts of your life

Paper & Pencil

Ruler

Drawing Board

Your choice of additional drawing/painting materials

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. With your ruler and pencil, plot out a smaller drawing area on your paper to create a compressed view with a large window of white space that allows you to focus in on the drawing.

2. Draw the objects individually within the smaller drawing space.

3. You can use any medium you feel like using.

4. Create a personal narrative about yourself by showing these objects in relationship with each other. Are they related? If so, why? Are they different? If so, what does that tell us about the fact that they are all together?

5. Be aware of the accuracy of your perspective and scale in the initial drawing and throughout the process of either completing this as a drawing, painting or mixed media. The compressed view can be challenging and when we introduce new media it can add new challenges. Remember, these are fun and interesting challenges that teach us more about how to make our own unique art work!

Design Challenge #12: Creating Collections & Installations
Supplies Needed

Your Unique Collection of Items or Found Objects

Your collection of multiple paintings or artworks or journals

Goal of this Project

In this project we begin to understand ourselves as artists collecting and creating a full and lush body of work unique to us
Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Start collecting real life objects, gathering with intention and meaning.

2. Begin creating your installation by arranging the objects, either on the floor, on a wall, on the table.

3. This principle can be applied to a collection of artworks or created objects as well.

4. Begin to play with the scale of your objects and think about translating smaller pieces into a larger installation.

5. All the installation to grow and evolve as you continue to add to its design.
